A lot of talented professionals feel stuck when it comes to updating their LinkedIn profile. They know they’ve outgrown their current role, yet they’re unsure how to present themselves for the opportunities they truly want next.
One of the most effective ways to solve this is by reverse-engineering your LinkedIn profile from your dream role—the role you’d accept tomorrow if it were offered.
Here’s the process I use and teach:
1. Start with your needs, values, and direction
Before you begin rewriting your profile, take time to understand who you are now.
What matters to you in this season of your career?
What kind of work energises you?
What type of leadership, culture, and pace do you thrive in?
Clarity at this stage ensures you’re building a profile that reflects where you’re heading, not just where you’ve been.
2. Research organisations that genuinely feel like a fit
Your goal isn’t to appeal to everyone — just the right ones.
Explore companies whose culture, values, and direction align with yours.
Look at the tone they use, the qualities they emphasise, and the type of people they celebrate.
This gives you a deeper sense of who you’d actually enjoy working with.
3. Review their current job offerings
Scroll through roles that match your desired career path — even if you’re not applying yet.
The job titles, responsibilities, and requirements tell you what matters to the organisation right now.
4. Study the job descriptions for your ideal role
This step is the heart of the process.
Read multiple descriptions for your preferred role and highlight the recurring themes:
- Skills
- Behaviours
- Competencies
- Outcomes
- Keywords
- Tone and communication style
This gives you a blueprint of what exceptional looks like in that space.
5. Align your LinkedIn profile and CV with the role you want
This doesn’t mean reinventing yourself. It simply means framing your real experience in a way that reflects the strengths their organisation values.
I take the job description and ensure my resume and LinkedIn profile highlight the capabilities I genuinely hold—the ones that match their needs.
I write at a level suited to the seniority of the role and in a tone aligned with the culture of the company.
In other words:
I align my strengths with the opportunities I want to attract.
6. Make it easy for the right recruiters to find you
When your profile mirrors the competencies, language, and requirements of your dream role, recruiters searching for talent at that level are far more likely to notice you and reach out.
This process isn’t about pretending.
It’s about clarity, confidence, and communicating your value with intention.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to translate your experience into a compelling profile, I can help.
